It is made from asphalt and a variety of rubber modifiers and solvents. In a heat application process the seams are heated to melt the asphalt together and create a seal. Modified rubber roofing is resistant to splitting from thermal shock.

This is a two ply modified bitumen rubber roofing material. Modified bitumen is approved for flat roofs with minimal slope but roll roofing is not viable below a 2 12 pitch two inches of rise for each twelve inches of horizontal run with exposed nails or a maybe little lower with concealed nail installation.
