My Door Handle Won T Turn

Remove the handle by taking out the retaining screws usually two located at the top and bottom of the inside handle.

3 if this does not help remove the knob and check the spindle. Paint on the edge of the door sometimes prevents the barrel from retracting. Remove the thru spindle. Flip the key and open the door.

Place flat head screwdriver in the gap you removed the spindle from. Don t use a wet. Here are the general steps to remove the handle and lock from the door and test the retraction mechanism. If the set screw on the handle is stripped and difficult to tighten replace it with a new one.

If this is the problem clean the paint off. Twist the screwdriver to see if the mechanism engages properly. The knob should turn freely. Then tighten the screw until you feel it resting against the flat side of the spindle.

Door gets stuck another problem with many door knobs latches and even hinges is that the door itself will get stuck and close or open hard. Attempt to free the lock button by pushing on it. Check to see that the door striker the spring loaded bolt that latches the door pushes in and springs back easily. The lock button on the door knob is stuck the solution.

2 hold the knob on the other side of the door and turn the loose knob clockwise until it fits snugly. Take the handles knobs off of the door. Push on the lock button and hold it in. Step 3 turn the handle over and if necessary reverse the latch nose.

Remove the two screws one on either side of the handle and remove the knob. If the spindle is worn it must be replaced. You can fix this problem relocating the hinges or using longer screws. Slide the key in the lock and tap lightly on the key to lubricate the inside of the lock.

Spray the door key with a graphite based lubricant. Leave the striker bolt in place. Replace the handle and reinsert and tighten the retaining screws. To fix the door knob figure out where the connections have gone awry.

Use a tool a flathead screwdriver will work to twist within the gap the thru spindle inserts into. It will come in two pieces. Take knob handle off the door. See if this retracts the handle.
