After a long ride or a ride in pouring rain it s a good idea to squirt a bit of chain lube onto the chain to keep it lubricated.

Most modern motorcycle chains are sealed with o rings or x rings some other fancy rubbery ring to keep grease inside the pins. Some people say you don t need to lube an o ring chain but they re missing the point. An o ring chain is a whole lot less needy. It stands to reason that non sealed chains found on small capacity bikes need lubricating but is motorcycle chain lube necessary on bigger bikes or is it just a scam to make us spend 15 on a can of grease. While these chains require less upkeep and tend to not need to be replaced as often they do require some care.

Note that like lots of manufacturers motorex offers road and off road formulas. These kinds of heavy duty chains are more expensive than open chains but last much longer and stretch. O ring or x ring chains use small seals around the chain s rollers to hold lubricant in place. O ring chains also stretch less and last far longer than the standard chain.

Of course the lube eventually dissipates and requires added lubrication but generally offers a longer lasting coating preventing premature wear as you power through mud sand and water which helps explain why the off road crowd prefers the o ring chain. There isn t a chain on the market that doesn t require a small amount of maintenance from time to time. Normally motorcycle chain lubes work best when applied to the chain they were created for.
